A Restorative Professional Development Journey through the History, Culture, Scientific and Literary Heritage at Cedarmere.
Objectives:
- To provide an immersive retreat experience at Cedarmere, the home of Poet William Cullen Bryant, that delivers a restorative and insightful educational experience for school administrators, coordinators, and librarians on Long Island
- To integrate and model pathways to rounded experiences for teachers and students that blend together Social Studies, the Natural Sciences, and English Language Arts
- To develop and bring awareness to a local treasure, Cedarmere, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and the New York State Underground Heritage Trail
- To experience Bryant’s expertise in horticulture and science
- To collaborate with colleagues on curriculum
- To relax in a beautiful location with rich literary, cultural and mindfulness experiences in nature
- To visit the Newly Restored Mill and Bryant’s Restored Library where he wrote some of his most famous nature poetry
All inclusive retreat includes locally catered lunch, presentations, tours, workshops, gentle yoga and materials.
Audience: K-12 School Administrators, Social Studies and Science Coordinators, STEAM Teachers, and Librarians

Schedule
Morning:
8:00 AM - 8:30 AM: Registration and Welcome Coffee
8:30 AM - 9:00 AM: Opening Ceremony and Introduction to Cedarmere's Significance in literature, art, science and nature
Session 1: The Significance of Cedarmere in Education
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Guided Tour of Cedarmere, including Bryant's Study and Gardens, the Mill and Native Pollinator Gardens
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Breakout groups by area of interest and expertise with guided writing prompts
11:00-11:30 AM: Morning Stretch in the garden
LUNCH
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Local caterer to serve picnic lunch on the Porch at Cedarmere overlooking the gardens and Hempstead Harbor
Session 2: Long Island Cultural Insights and Collaboration
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Library Workshop: Resources and Educational
Opportunities in Long Island Studies.
Session 3: Literary Reflections in Nature
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM: Breakout groups for open collaboration, research, nature walk or guided writing inspired by the poetry of William Cullen Bryant
2:30 PM - 2:45 PM: Afternoon Stretch
2:45- 3:00 PM Closing Reflections and Departure
